Common Sense

The idea of common sense has two meanings. I always thought it meant that there is a knowing that is common to everyone. Simple basic things that everyone in their right mind just know, at birth. This is where we like to point out, “that person has no common sense” when they don’t know something that we think is obvious to all.

I learned about another definition that in my mind actually fits much better. Common sense is about our senses. Sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste. When all of these senses “agree” then the experience we have is common to our senses. It is also called the animal soul. This way of knowing I feel is so important when we are trying to discern some truth or to decide if we can trust someone. It’s a good skill to have when listening to politicians these days.
